Introduction
Monterey-area accommodations range from no-frills motels to luxurious resorts. Many of the area's small inns and bed-and-breakfasts pamper the traveler in grand style, serving not only full breakfasts but afternoon or early evening wine and hors d'oeuvres. Pacific Grove has quietly turned itself into the region's B&B capital; Carmel also has charming inns in residential areas. Truly lavish resorts, with everything from featherbeds to heated floors, cluster in exclusive Pebble Beach and pastoral Carmel Valley. Many of these accommodations are not suitable for children, so if you're traveling with kids, be sure to ask before you book.
Around Monterey Bay high season runs April through October. Rates during winter, especially at the larger hotels, may drop by 50% or more, and B&Bs often offer midweek specials in the off-season. However, even the simplest of the area's lodgings are expensive, and most properties require a two-night stay on weekends.
