In a leisurely day you can begin to get a feel for the East Bay. The tour below can be done on foot and public transportation, though it's easier to do in a car.
Begin your tour around U.C. Berkeley, either strolling the shops on Telegraph Avenue or College Avenue or touring one of the university's many fine museums, among them the anthropology and art museums and the Lawrence Hall of Science. Have lunch at one of the eateries in Rockridge before heading to Old Oakland. Tour the streets of Old Oakland and then walk north a few blocks to the Oakland Museum of California. If you're not in the mood for a museum, poke around Oakland's nearby Chinatown.
From the museum, backtrack (walk, drive, or take an AC Transit bus) to Jack London Square. Tour the waterfront and the shops and peek into Heinhold's First and Last Chance Saloon, one of Jack London's haunts and heavy on the funk factor. You can have dinner at one of several fine restaurants in the Jack London Square area: try Soizic for upscale fare or Everett and Jones for barbecue in a casual setting. Afterward, head over to Yoshi's (which also serves dinner) to hear some great jazz.
