Shasta Cascade Wonderland Itineraries

There’s something for everyone in the Shasta Cascade Region of Northern California. We’ve put together several themed road trips to give you a head start on your travel planning—you’re sure to find one that excites you! You can follow these trips line by line, or create your own by combining suggestions from different lists to fit your personal travel preferences. These great road trips were compiled as a guide to steer you toward a diverse and satisfying experience while you visit this beautiful region of Northern California. We can’t wait for you to make them your own!

                                                                   

The “Come Over Darling” Romantic Getaway

Focus: Create opportunities for sweet moments, unique experiences, and wining and dining with your special someone.

  • Stay at Bed and Breakfasts and eat at the finest local restaurants during the extent of your trip.
  • Visit Weaverville: a true mountain town getaway with quaint downtown streets and restaurants.
  • Take a helicopter tour of Redding and Shasta Lake.
  • See the sun set behind Mt. Shasta as you have dinner on aboard a moving train Siskiyou County.
  • Choose one of the numerous local wineries or breweries for wine and beer tasting along your route. 
  • Spend the night in Chico, and take advantage of the Feather River Scenic Byway to take that special photo for your Holiday cards or announcements.

The “Extreme, Green, Life is a Highway and I’m Gonna Ride It” Outdoor Adventure Trip

Focus: Experience the wild and invigorating outdoors life available in the Shasta Cascade region: for those who welcome a challenge, live large, and live to tell about it.

  • Hike: Lassen Peak by moonlight or the trails at Castle Crags State Park.
  • Bike: Biz Johnson Rail Trail 25 miles from Susanville to Westwood.
  • Backpack: Access the Pacific Crest Trail or explore the Trinity Alps Wilderness.
  • Kayak: Hire a guide service to take you down sections of the Klamath or Trinity River.
  • Snowboard: At Mt. Shasta Ski Park during winter and spring months.
  • Swim:  Whiskeytown National Recreational Area has cool, clear water ideal for swimming and boating.
  • Climb: Take a few days and get familiar with Mt. Shasta. You’ll need to hire a guide service or have some previous   experience to reach the peak, but the view from the top will be worth it!


The “Historical Treasures Make You Rich” Cultural Heritage Discovery Tour

 

Focus: Visit significant historical sites and get a feel for this region’s land, resources, stories, and people.

  • Visit the historic sites of Lava Beds NM and the city of Tulelake, CA.
  • Tour the Joss House in Weaverville, the oldest Taoist Chinese Temple in California.
  • Take a train ride on an authentic vintage steam engine in Yreka.
  • Stop in at the new Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor’s Center at Lassen Volcanic National Park.
  • Tour and taste produce at family farms and orchards in Butte County.
  • Return to days gone by and ride a horse or stay at a ranch in Modoc County—where the Old West stands still.


The “Are We There Yet? Yes We Are. Happy Kid” Family Vacation

Focus: Maximize fun and bonding with minimum time in the car—All outings listed are accessible by a drive of 1 hour and 15 minutes or less from Redding.

  • Spend some time on a houseboat on Shasta Lake—the house-boating capital of the world.
  • Explore the ruins at Shasta State Historic Park on your way to Whiskeytown Lake.
  • Discover Turtle Bay Exploration Park, Museum, and the other attractions at the Sundial Bridge.
  • Take advantage of the snow and ski or sled at Mt. Shasta near McCloud during winter and spring.
  • Visit the Mt. Shasta National Fish Hatchery and take in the art scene in Mt. Shasta City.
  • Tour the Shasta Dam then rent a raft to float a section of the Sacramento River—it’s kid friendly!


The “Retired & Relaxing (Or Just Plain Relaxing)” Leisure Tour

Focus: Relaxing and enjoying the journey, retired or not!

  • Go treasure hunting at the antique and craft stores in Red Bluff and Cottonwood.
  • Take a waterfall tour—highlight Whiskeytown NRA and the majestic Burney Falls!
  • Experience one of the top-notch golf courses surrounded by the natural beauty of Plumas County.
  • Drive the Lassen Scenic Byway to Hat Creek for excellent fishing.
  • Get an up close view of native plants and animals at the Klamath Basin National Wildlife Preserve.

 

The “Right Off the Interstate” Highlight Guide  

Focus: Suggestions for stopping to smell the roses on your journey without venturing too far off the interstate. If you are headed south, start and the bottom of the list and work your way up!

  • Take a detour on HWY 99 through scenic farmland and road side fruit stands.(Northbound Exit 525B, Southbound Exit 649)
  • Eat Olives in Corning, the Olive Capitol of the World! (Exit 631)
  • Stop in and say hello to the friendly staff at The California Welcome Center in Anderson. (Exit 667)
  • Stroll across The Sundial Bridge in Redding and stop in at the café for a treat. (Exit 678)
  • Get a view of Mt. Shasta from the Shasta Dam in Shasta Lake City. (Exit 695)
  • Have a picnic and take a quick hike at Castle Crags State Park. (Exit 724)
  • Take a picture by the arched gateway on Main Street in Weed. (Exit 747)
  • Learn about the old days at the Siskiyou County Museum in Yreka. (Exit 773)
