Tours: Quiet Corner Cycling Tours, Danielson – If you prefer not to go it alone, or Cycle New England, the owners will plan any type of biking tour, they also work with area lodging properties and restaurants to put together packages.
Day 1
Airline State Park Rail Trail, East Hampton to Mass. Border. Abandoned NY-Boston railroad line turned bike and hike path with panoramic views. E. Hampton to Windham (22 miles) finished for road bikes; north of Windham, mountain biking only.
Lunch: Willimantic Brewing Co., Willimantic (Near Windham). Living landmark restaurant and pub brewery.
Other options: Safe Haven B&B, Hampton. If you’re staying there, it has some of the best home-cooking around; The Altnaveigh Inn and restaurant; Storrs – Well prepared American cuisine in a charming setting.
Day 2
Rte. 169 from Putnam to Pomfret to Canterbury (10 miles) – One of America’s 14 Scenic Byways lined with 18th c. farms. Stop before or after lunch at some of Putnam’s many antique stores.
Lunch: TheVanilla Bean Café, Pomfret – Many Best’s By Connecticut Magazine including Best Outdoor Dining, Best Sandwiches and Best Vegetarian.
Another option: Nikki’s Dog House, Putnam (860-928-0252)– Great place for a Coney Island Dog or gyro.
Westford Hill Distillers, Ashford – Back down 169 a bit and across on 44 (5 miles), flatter terrain on 44 – or you can drive. Producing aged brandies flavored by pears from their rare orchards. Tour and taste. Please note: Check distillery hours before you go.
Another option, visit Crooke Orchards (860-429-5336) in Ashford where you can visit the farm store and pick your own blueberries and apples.
Dinner: The Harvest, Pomfret – Connecticut Magazine voted “Best” – any style, any sauce steak. Reservations recommended.
Other option: 85 Main Street, Putnam – A modern, sleek counterpoint to your country surroundings – American fusion cuisine artfully presented.
Day 3
Fenton – Ruby Park & Wildlife Preserve, Willington. Eight 8 miles roundtrip – Take your time and view marked natural points of interest.
Lunch/Brunch (offered on Sunday only) --Still River Café, Eastford – Take 44 East and up 198 a bit (5 miles). Widely acclaimed restaurant uses only local products including their own. Elegantly casual dining. Stay after a seasonal, organic lunch to tour the extensive perennial, herb and vegetable gardens on 27 acres before returning bikes in Willington and heading home.
