Introduction
Prices are for two people in a standard double room in high season. Although some hotels (especially on the mainland) have adopted steady year-round rates, many adjust their rates to reflect seasonal demand. The peak occurs in winter, with a dip in summer (prices are often more negotiable than rate cards let on). You'll find the best values from Easter until just before Memorial Day (which is when the city holds a widely attended hip-hop and rap festival, now known as Urban Beach Week) and in September and October (the height of hurricane season). Keep in mind that Miami hoteliers collect roughly 12.5% -- ouch -- for city and resort taxes; parking fees can run up to $24 per evening; and tips for bellhops, valet parkers, concierges, and housekeepers add to the expense. Some hotels actually tack on an automatic 15% gratuity. All told, you can easily spend 25% more than your room rate to sleep in Miami.
