Introduction
Hotel prices are for two people in a standard double room in high season, excluding service charges and 12% tax. Although Savannah has its share of chain hotels and motels, the city's most distinctive lodgings are the more than two dozen historic inns, guest houses, and B&Bs gracing the Historic District. If the term historic inn brings to mind images of roughing it in shabby-genteel mansions with antiquated plumbing, you're in for a surprise. Most of these inns are in mansions with the requisite high ceilings, spacious rooms, and ornate carved millwork. And most do have canopy, four-poster, or Victorian brass beds. But amid all the antique surroundings, there is modern luxury: enormous baths, many with whirlpools or hot tubs; film libraries for in-room VCRs; and turndown service with a chocolate, a praline, even a discreet brandy on your nightstand. Continental breakfast and afternoon refreshments are often included in the rate. Prices have risen since the filming of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Special seasons and holidays, such as St. Patrick's Day, push prices up a bit as well. On the other hand, weekdays and the off-season can yield excellent bargains.
