While in town, take the time to take in Baltimore’s striking and diverse artistic treasures. There is so much more to Baltimore's arts community than you might have imagined. Start out your afternoon at the American Visionary Art Museum and experience the truly original and moving works of untrained or outsider artists. We promise that you’ve never seen a museum quite like it.
Head north toward Charles Street and Mount Vernon, stopping at the galleries that line your path. When you’ve arrived at Mount Vernon Square, you’ll find the Walters Art Museum, one of the most highly regarded museums in the country, now offering free admission. Inside, you’ll see classical works and a treasure trove of renaissance art and collectibles, as well as an impressive array of antiquities and artifacts. While you’re in the neighborhood, check out the Maryland Historical Society to see “The Star-Spangled Banner” in Francis Scott Key’s actual handwriting. Or, at the opposite end of the spectrum, visit the very avant-garde exhibitions hosted by the Contemporary Museum.
Pause for dinner, and then it’s on with the show…theater, that is. Whether you choose to partake in the intimate theater of Baltimore’s CENTERSTAGE or the rousing energy of the Grammy-winning Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, you can’t lose!
