Because it was considered the southernmost city where African Americans could live as free men toward the end of the era of slavery in America, Baltimore is home to a wealth of history, sites and artifacts significant to the narrative of African American heritage. Begin your journey at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Heritage, the largest museum of its kind on the East Coast and one of Baltimore’s newest gems.
From here, head around the corner and down the street to Fell’s Point and the Frederick Douglass – Isaac Myers Maritime Park where the lives of two of America’s first black businessmen are celebrated within the history of Baltimore’s shipbuilding industry.
Hop on a cab and head north to Baltimore’s famous and newly expanded Great Blacks In Wax Museum, the only museum of its kind dedicated to the struggles and successes of African Americans. Another short cab ride will have you back at your hotel, but what you learn will stay with you for a lifetime.
