In 1858 a group of Chippewa Indians set up camp on the south shore of a lake, in which the Mississippi River traverses, named ‘Be-may-ji-ma-gaug’, meaning ‘lake with crossing water’. As Scandinavian settlers came to the area, the lake and town became referred to as ‘Bemidji’. (Beh-mid’-jie)
