Introduction

Minnesota is at a crossroads of the United States, where east meets west and forest meets prairie. Famous for its vast presence of water with nearly 15,000 lakes, it is also home to the headwaters of the Mississippi River and takes its name from the Dakota Indian word meaning “sky-blue waters.” While its culture strongly reflects the heritage of German, Nordic and French Canadian immigrants, today one finds a growing Hispanic, Somali and Hmong influence. From the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul to the rural populations of Greater Minnesota, the state offers a unique blend of nature, arts, and social progress aiming to protect its abundant natural resources. Twenty-two scenic drives allow visitors to explore all corners of the state.
