Custer Country Itineraries

  • A Weekend in Billings

Experience Montana’s breathtaking experiences by day and relaxing hospitality at night—a weekend in Billings!

Day 1

Have breakfast on the 20th floor of the Crowne Plaza Hotel at a table looking west over the cityscape framed by the mountains and the endless blue sky. Drive your car or saddle up your Harley and go to the Moss Mansion for a guided tour of the grand home of P.B. Moss built in the early 1900’s.

Your next stop might be the Yellowstone Art Museum. Take in the awesome works of Will James and C.M. Russell. Many additional exhibits rotate through this cultural center and vary from the historic to the modern, from the rustic to the polished, but are always stunning and thought-provoking.

Have a light lunch and Black Widow Stout at the Montana Brewing Company (one of five microbreweries in Billings) then head out for Pompeys Pillar – site of Captain William Clark’s signature on this unique butte. Enjoy the state-of-the-art visitors’ center and a walk along the Yellowstone River. Return to Billings for one of our exciting music festivals held throughout the city all summer long— Alive After Five, the Magic City Blues Fest, Montana Avenue Live, and more.

Day 2

After a relaxing night enjoy fresh squeezed juice with your home made cinnamon roll on Historic Montana Avenue before you leave for the Little Big Horn Battlefield site of Custer’s Last Stand. If you are in Custer Country in late June, you must experience the breathtaking reenactment of this great battle. Spend the day, have an Indian taco, then enjoy the Ultimate Warrior Challenge—a triathlon comprised of running, bareback horse riding, and canoeing.

Cool down after the ride back to Billings with an icy drink at the Rock Pile, and if the Billings Mustangs Professional Baseball Team is in town, take in a game and a Stang Burger at the brand new Dehler Park.

Day 3

Finish your weekend with a Sunday drive on a great sweeping road that follows the Musselshell River and is surrounded by fields of yellow clover. Swing into Ingomar and swap stories with the locals over sheepherder hors d’oeuvres at the Jersey Lilly Saloon, then enjoy a wagon ride through history to finish your afternoon before returning to Billings. Cap your day with dinner at The Rex. This restaurant is a real piece of the old west. Originally built in 1919 by Alfred Heimer who was Buffalo Bill Cody's chef for his Wild West Show, it was the place to meet in Billings! Will James, Calamity Jane, and Buffalo Bill were regulars; and during Prohibition, word has it that the Billings' constabulary were some of its best customers. Today, its great food and its ambiance tie together the history and hospitality of Custer Country.
