One look at Glacier National Park confirms why it’s called the “Crown of the Continent.” Its immeasurable beauty is almost hard to describe, making it a place that needs to be seen in order for its charm to be grasped.

With its emerald valleys, hillsides of wildflower and sparkling blue alpine lakes, Glacier has one of the most scenic drives you will ever take—the Going-to-the-Sun Road, a historic highway lacing its way through the park over Logan Pass. This year, the road is celebrating its 75th anniversary.

Out of the car, the park’s 700 miles of trails weave into one of the largest intact ecosystems in the lower 48 states. The trails take modern-day explorers along alpine streams, crystal lakes and rushing waterfalls. Plus, the trails provide visitors a chance to catch glimpses of one of the more than 70 species of mammals (including grizzly bears, wolverines, gray wolves and lynx) and over 260 species of birds making their home in the park’s boundaries. From the Visitor Center at Logan Pass, you can travel trails in all directions, going to high lakes or the Granite Park Chalet, a remote lodge in the park’s backcountry.

The Glacier Institute conducts classes, adventure camps and more, helping to educate all ages about the habitat and animals of the park.

Leisure time in the park comes in the form of trail rides, scenic boat rides, dips in lakes or hopping aboard a red “jammer” bus as its driver and guide navigate the road and relate incredible stories of the park, allowing passengers to sit back and take in the views.

Lodging in the park is easily available and includes several historic lodges, including Many Glacier Hotel, Lake McDonald Lodge and Glacier Park Lodge.

In collaboration with Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada, Glacier National Park was designated as the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, the world’s first International Peace Park. As a peace park, it serves as a reminder of the longstanding peace and friendship between Canada and the Unites States.
