Day 1 Missoula
Using Missoula as your base, you can experience several Western Montana gems. Begin your day with a visit to the Smokejumper Visitor Center, which offers tours of the parachute loft and training facilities. Follow with a stop at the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Visitor Center where you can learn about the beauty, diversity and importance of elk country across North America. Finish with a stroll through the historic downtown area, featuring classic early-century buildings and offering unique shops, galleries, fine dining, cultural activities and an exciting nightlife.
Day 2 National Bison Range
Head north from Missoula to the National Bison Range, located near Moiese. Driving through the range, visitors can see bison, antelope, elk, bighorn sheep and heart-stopping vistas. On your return trip, make sure to stop at the St. Ignatius Mission to take in the elaborate frescos. If time permits, try catching a show at the Missoula Children’s Theatre.
Day 3 Bitterroot Valley
No trip to the Missoula area is complete without visiting the Bitterroot Valley. Home to retirees, gentleman ranchers, and jaw-dropping scenery, it offers a healthy slice of everything Montana. Besides world-class fishing and millions of acres of pristine wilderness, the valley is rich in history. There’s Montana’s first settlement, Stevensville, as well as St. Mary’s Mission, Fort Owen and several museums. It’s also home to copper baron Marcus Daly’s mansion. For a real treat before heading back to Missoula, find lodging at one of the charming ranches or inns found throughout the valley.
