Las Vegas Itineraries

Fall and winter are perfect seasons for you to explore the outdoor playgrounds the surround Vegas.

Land

When you need a break from all the neon, see the natural light at Red Rock Canyon. Just one hour west of the city, the desert sun illuminates striking red sandstone formations against gray limestone. There are more than 30 miles of hiking trails and climbs range from daring descents on the Aztec sandstone for experts to smaller, rounded boulders for amateur explorers. For those who want to see and do without breaking a sweat, the 13-mile one-way drive offers vistas, overlooks and access to short day hikes.

Water

Only 35 miles southeast of Las Vegas, Lake Mead National Recreation Area offers dramatic desert scenery and year-round outdoor activities on Lake Mead and Lake Mohave. Set yourself up with a boat for a day of water skiing, sunbathing and swimming, or suggest a leisurely afternoon of kayaking or canoeing along the 600 miles of shoreline. For longer getaways, arrange an overnight aboard a houseboat rental. Another option is the 45-minute drive to one of the greatest manmade structures in America, the Hoover Dam. In 1935, the concrete gravity arch created the Lake Mead reservoir in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River. The sheer magnitude of this national historic landmark — wider than two football fields end to end.

Air

By foot or boat just won’t do for some folks. For thrill-seekers, freefalling from 15,000 feet is the only way to experience the desert and all its colors. Go for a tandem or solo skydiving instruction at one of the area’s operators — many of which specialize in first-time jumps.
