Traveling the road around Lake Tahoe is the ultimate “Sunday Drive.” While there are several destinations at the lake that make the trip worthwhile, the real payoff is the spectacular natural scenery. The drive itself is the destination.
On the northeastern side of the lake is Sand Harbor State Park, the only state park at the lake and a wonderful spot to spend a few hours. It’s a day-use area only, and fees apply. Picnic tables are nestled among the pines and many have paved paths for easy access. For an overview of the entire area, walk the Sandy Point Nature Trail, or take a short 1.5-mile hike north to discover Hidden Beach, a secluded spot for sunbathing and swimming.
Heading south around the lake, visitors will find Zephyr Cove, a bustling area home to one of the lake’s paddlewheel cruise boats, the M.S. Dixie. This is also a great lakeside spot to lounge in the sun, rent Jet skis or motorboats or even sign up for a parasailing adventure.
“South Shore” is the most populated area of Lake Tahoe and straddles the California-Nevada border. This is where the action is – hotels rise above the tree tops and casino lights glitter against the clear blue sky. This is where visitors will find gaming, great food, shops and top-name entertainers year-round.
Get out the camera on your way northwest from Heavenly because the next stop is Emerald Bay, one of the most photographed spots in the world. Stop at the Inspiration Point Vista and see for yourself.
Lake Tahoe is truly one of the jewels of the United States. Its clear, brilliantly blue water sparkles while the serene Sierra Nevada shimmers in the crisp alpine air. After a drive around this high-altitude paradise, it is clear that this is some of Mother Nature’s finest work.
