Historic Speedwell is an early 19th century farmstead and ironworks managed by the Morris County Park Commission and home to a number of historic Revolutionary War-era homes. It features the life and times of the Stephen Vail family and their contribution to the development of the first successful electro-magnetic telegraph. Stephen’s son, Alfred, collaborated with Samuel F.B. Morse and first demonstrated their invention here in the factory building, now a National Landmark site.
Through exhibits and guided tours, including demonstrations of the telegraph, Historic Speedwell captures the birth of the Industrial Revolution. Open April to October with some holiday programming in December. There is an admission charge and a gift shop.
