New York City Travel Articles

New York City is filled with some of the most spectacular art museums and galleries in the world. To get the most of New York’s world-class art experience, be sure to sample from these offerings.

Museum Mile

Visit the city’s fine art organizations of Museum Mile on the Upper East Side. Since they are all just blocks apart, you can take a break across the street in Central Park or in a nearby café along Madison Avenue. Inside the Solomon R. Guggenheim’s striking rotunda is an ever-changing showcase, while the permanent collection includes stunning works by Matisse and van Gogh. Pick a few exhibits and galleries to focus on at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, such as the new wing of Greek and Roman galleries.

Institutions throughout the Boroughs

In Manhattan, the Museum of Modern Art houses an unrivaled collection, including works from Picasso, van Gogh and Pollack. Plus, the architecture of the museum is equally impressive. You can also marvel at the lively, eclectic mix of 20th-century American art at the Whitney Museum of American Art, explore German and Austrian art at the Neue Galerie, or see paintings and sculpture at the Frick Collection, a former mansion. With more than 250 art galleries in a seven-block radius centered around West 24th Street, the district of Chelsea has plenty to choose from—and they’re all free. Still want more? Check out the diverse collections at the Chelsea Art Museum, Rubin Museum of Art, or the Grey Art Gallery.

Be sure to make time to visit the Brooklyn Museum for its permanent collections of Egyptian and Native American art. You can follow it with a visit to Queens and the P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center where innovative and interactive artwork grabs the spotlight, or the Noguchi Museum which features a serene sculpture garden. Or head to the Bronx Museum of the Arts which showcases modern exhibitions after having recently undergone an extensive expansion and renovation.
