New York City Itineraries

From Madison Avenue’s couture showrooms to the funky boutiques of downtown, shopping in New York City is nonstop.

Downtown

You’ll find plenty of eye-candy downtown, with the people, the hip boutiques, the funky only-in-New-York shops, and even the top-name retailers. Between Broadway and Sixth Avenue are all of the aforementioned, including Canal Jean Company, recently reopened at Astor Place, and Pearl River Mart in SoHo. Another red-hot shopping area downtown is the funky neighborhood of NoLita. And if you want to up your hip quotient, head to the high-end designer boutiques of the Meatpacking District.

Midtown

Along Fifth Avenue, from Rockefeller Center to 57th Street, it’s Audrey Hepburn meets Sex and the City, classic New York department stores mixed with glossy international designer boutiques and massive flagship stores that are attractions themselves. A left or right turn onto 57th Street takes you to more high-end chains.

Madison Avenue

Sophisticated luxury defines this fashion corridor. It’s an exquisite walk between 57th and 79th Streets, where the classiest Italian, French, and American boutiques abound.

Brooklyn

Thrift stores, funky boutiques, vintage, and rock-and-roll ready-to-wear are found in pockets throughout this borough. Check out the shops on Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg and Seventh Avenue in Park Slope, both only a few subway stops out of Manhattan.
