Three-Day History & Culture Adventure

This three day visit, The Westchester Way, provides insight into the history and culture of the area. From the “Legend of Sleepy Hollow” to legendary families, estates and events, great care has been taken to preserve traditions and customs in Westchester.

Day 1

Tour of Kykuit - the Rockefeller Estate, Sleepy Hollow
The expansive estate home of four generations of the Rockefeller family. Commanding a breathtaking view of the Hudson River, it features extensive stone terraces, formal gardens, glorious fountains, and Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller’s collections of 20th century art and sculpture (914) 631-9491. Tours range from one hour to 3.5 hours.

Lunch any restaurant in the area.

Tour of Lyndhurst, on Route 9 in Tarrytown.
America’s greatest Gothic Revival castle, occupied by three prominent New York City families, including financier Jay Gould. Now the property of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Lyndhurst offers one of the finest examples of nineteenth-century estate landscapes, with splendid grounds and gardens (914) 631-4481. Allow one hour for tour.

Evening out at Westchester Broadway Theatre, Elmsford.
Enjoy a three-course dinner and a live musical performance a popular Broadway revival at the longest-running year-round Actor’s Equity theater in New York State. (914) 592-2268 Allow 6:00 until 10:00 p.m.

Day 2

Head north on Route 684 and drive past John Jay Homestead and the Katonah Museum of Art, both on Route 22, off of Route 35, en route to Caramoor.

Tour of the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, 149 Girdle Ridge Road, Katonah, off of Route 35.
Caramoor, a Mediteranean-style villa with several extensive gardens, is home to New York’s largest outdoor summer music festival, as well as year-round musical performances in many genres. Tours of the House Museum showcase period rooms filled with fine and decorative arts from Europe and China. (914) 232-5035 Allow one hour.

Explore downtown Katonah's shopping and dining district.

Transfer to The Westchester (Mall), White Plains for lunch in one of two restaurants, (City Limits Diner or P.F. Chang's) or individual lunches in food court. Free time to shop following lunch.
Explore and shop at a superlative shopping destination boasting over 150 fine stores, including Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Tiffany’s, Brooks Brothers, Louis Vuitton and more. (914) 421-1333

Take a drive through the PepsiCo Sculpture Garden off of Anderson Hill Road in Purchase or visit the Neuberger Museum of Art off of Anderson Hill Road in Purchase. Then return to hotel.

Evening at The Performing Arts Center, Purchase
The Performing Arts Center at Purchase Colleg is the region’s largest arts center, offering over 70 events each season of dance, classical music, jazz, theater and family events. (Home to the Westchester Philharmonic Orchestra). (914) 251-6200

Day 3

Breakfast and Check-out.

Tour of Sunnyside, West Sunnyside Lane off Route 9 in Tarrytown.
Guides in 17th century costume lead tours of the “cozy snuggery” of Washington Irving directly on the banks of the Hudson River. Irving, the legendary American author of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle”, made Tarrytown his final home.

Depart for Hudson River Museum, 511 Warburton Avenue in Yonkers off Saw Mill River Parkway south for tour, plantetarium show and lunch in the Hudson River Café.

A cultural complex on the banks of the Hudson River, the Museum includes modern galleries with changing displays of 19th and 20th century art, and the state-of-the-art Andrus Planetarium. The museum also includes the Glenview Mansion, the restored home of John Trevor now on the National Register, built in 1876 with a High Victorian mixture of Gothic and Second Empire styles.
