Asheville Itineraries

For over a century, Asheville has been a popular destination. In the 1890s, the city earned an international reputation as a premier health resort. In the 1920s, the city became a playground for the rich and famous, including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Thomas Edison and Henry Ford.

Take a journey back into history and experience the Gilded Age firsthand with a visit to George Vanderbilt’s 250-room Biltmore House. Or relive the Victorian era at Asheville’s oldest home, the circa 1840 Smith-McDowell House and Museum. Literary buffs can explore the Thomas Wolfe Memorial, the acclaimed author’s boyhood home and the inspiration for his novel “Look Homeward, Angel.”

If architecture is your passion, stroll through downtown with an attentive eye. The same craftsmen who built Biltmore House constructed much of the architecture. The city also boasts more Art Deco architecture than any Southeastern city other than Miami Beach.
