Asheville Itineraries

Downtown Asheville offers an eclectic mix of shops and galleries, many owned by locals. Set off on foot to soak up the city’s unique bohemian vibe and art deco architecture.

Stop in one of the numerous art galleries that showcase rising stars and regional talent. In downtown, there are 30 galleries belonging to the Asheville Downtown Gallery Association. Take advantage of the association’s maps, self-guided tours and City Center art walks. For a quick overview of the local art scene visit the Woolworth Walk and browse through the offerings of 150 artists.

Be sure to make time for a visit to the Grove Arcade. This renovated historic building boasts stunning architecture. Wander through its many shop and galleries, then grab a bite to eat. Dining options range from wine bars and coffee shops to upscale restaurants and sidewalk cafés.

The next stop is Wall Street, a picturesque side street in downtown. Paint your own pottery at Fired Up Creative Lounge or shop for Art Deco-inspired jewelry at Overström Studio. If hunger calls, visit Early Girl Eatery for Southern organic cuisine, Laughing Seed for hip vegetarian fare or The Market Place for inventive food.

For a taste of local culture, wander Broadway to Biltmore Ave. Duck into L.O.F.T.—Lost Objects Found Treasures—for unusual finds, find a new brew at Bruisin’ Ales and shop for treasures from yesteryear in Mast General Store.
