Introduction
First-time visitors to Portland are often surprised by how diverse and inexpensive many restaurants are. Lovers of ethnic foods can choose from restaurants serving Chinese, French, Indian, Italian, Japanese, Middle Eastern, Tex-Mex, Thai, and Vietnamese specialties. Pacific Northwest cuisine also dominates; Portlanders view salmon with passion, and likewise other regional seafood including halibut, crab, oysters, and mussels.
Many restaurants are devoted to organic, locally grown produce such as wild mushrooms, hazelnuts, and berries, as well as free-range local beef and poultry. Portland claims to have more restaurants per capita than any other city in the country, so while it is easy to stumble upon some great food, it is also worth doing a little research to find some of the out-of-the-way places that have much to offer.
Many of the city's trendier restaurants are in Nob Hill and the Pearl District, and downtown is filled with many diverse, quality menus at some of the city's long-running old reliables. But an incredible smattering of cuisines can be found on the east side of town as well, near Hawthorne Boulevard and Alberta Street and tucked away in myriad neighborhoods in between.
