Portland's Quirky Attractions

Check out Voodoo Doughnut (on Southwest Third Avenue, just south of Burnside Street) for a uniquely Portland treat. If you’re traveling with your sweetheart, consider getting married here (advance reservations recommended). The owners of Voodoo Doughnut are ordained ministers; legal wedding ceremonies, including doughnuts and coffee for 10 people, go for less than $200.

If it’s Saturday or Sunday (March-Dec. 24), visit the Portland Saturday Market, an open-air arts-and-crafts market that operates on the weekends.

Walk east across the Burnside Bridge, turn left on Grand Avenue and you’ll discover Stark’s Vacuum Cleaner Museum (located inside Stark’s retail showroom), featuring more than 300 machines dating from the 1800s to the 1960s. This museum is sure to sweep you off your feet.

Walk back across the Burnside Bridge; wind your way to 728 S.W. First Ave. and feast your eyes on the Paint-by-Number Gallery in the storefront windows of Heinz Records, the recording label for Portland’s acclaimed band Pink Martini. Thomas Lauderdale, Pink Martini’s founder, has more than 200 such paintings (not all of them are displayed).

Perhaps it’s time for lunch at Kells Irish Restaurant & Pub, located at 112 S.W. Second Ave. This Portland institution is rated among the top Irish restaurants and pubs in the United States.

Head to Pioneer Courthouse Square for the 2 p.m. departure of Portland Walking Tours’ fascinating Underground Portland tour. Uncover the city’s steamy, seedy past, when unsuspecting men were shanghaied – kidnapped to work on seafaring ships.

Take the streetcar to the Portland Aerial Tram in the South Waterfront district and enjoy the ride as you head up to the top of Marquam Hill, where the campus of Oregon Health & Science University is located. As the tram’s gondolas make their three-minute journey, riders enjoy picture-perfect views of the Willamette River, Mount Hood and downtown Portland.
