Portland Itineraries

With more than 300 wineries and 72 varieties of grapes grown in Oregon, there are myriad itinerary possibilities. Pinot noir, Pinot gris, Chardonnay, merlot, and Riesling are among the predominant grapes grown, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. So, consider this route a mere suggestion – don’t be afraid to stop at other wineries or change course. And while tasting is encouraged, please remember to travel responsibly by designating a non-drinking driver.

Leave Portland via Interstate 5 South to Highway 99W West. You’ll pass wineries in Newberg and Dundee, Ore., but it may be too early for you to taste. At Highway 18, turn left (southwest) and follow the signs to the Evergreen Aviation Museum, home of Howard Hughes’ wooden flying wonder the Spruce Goose, an IMAX theater, and many other flying contraptions. Consider ordering a box lunch at the café – it will be ready for you when you leave, and you can enjoy it at one of the wineries later in the day.

After the museum, head back towards Dundee, Ore., and visit one of the state’s oldest (and still family-owned) wineries: Sokol Blosser Winery, just off Highway 99W. Then, stay on 99 West and turn right (north) on Highway 47. In Carlton, Ore., follow the signs for the Carlton Winemakers Studio, Oregon’s first sustainable, multi-winery facility. Continue north on Highway 47 past Gaston, Ore., and follow the signs to Montinore Vineyards, a winery that uses only estate-grown grapes for its wines.

Ready for something different? Check out SakéOne, the only American-owned brewery. It’s located in the town of Forest Grove, north of Montinore Vineyards via Highway 47.

From SakéOne, return to Highway 47 north and follow it the short distance to Pacific Avenue, where you’ll see McMenamins Grand Lodge on your left. This historic inn with its pub, restaurants, gardens and more is located in a former Masonic building. Or, turn right onto Pacific Avenue (Highway 8) and proceed approximately 10 miles (16km) through Cornelius and Hillsboro, Ore., turning left (north) on Southwest Cornelius Pass Road. After approximately three more miles (5km) you’ll see the McMenamins Cornelius Pass Roadhouse.

To return to Portland, continue north on Cornelius Pass Road for one-half mile (1km) and take Highway 26 East to Portland.
