Introduction

Washington County, Oregon, is an ideal destination for sophisticated travelers, and remains one of the best-kept secrets of the Pacific Northwest.

The burgeoning wine region in Washington County’s northern Willamette Valley features 20 wineries, each committed to the production of exquisitely handcrafted Pinot Noir and other varietals. In recent years, new wineries have entered the landscape, joining wineries that have been a part of the Oregon winemaking tradition since its start in the mid-20th century.

More than just wine, sample a handcrafted micro-brew at one of the local breweries. Or visit SakéOne, the only American-owned saké brewery in the world, and sample its premium-grade, fruit infused or organic sakés.

After sampling the local wines, beer and saké, golfers can hit the links at one of several nine- and 18-hole public/semi-private courses.

Wildlife and bird watching is plentiful here, as the there are several wetlands and nature preserves and hundreds of parks. Several miles of hiking and biking trails throughout the region give ample opportunity to enjoy the outdoor recreation for which Oregon has become known.

Farm lands are abundant, with crops ranging from vegetables, berries and fruits to vineyards, hazelnut groves and lavender fields. Taste the harvest at “u-pick” farms, where visitors pick their own fruits, berries, vegetables or flowers. Visit an alpaca farm, some of which have gift shops that sell yarn and other goods made from alpaca wool, or try some bison jerky at the L-Bar-T Bison Ranch.

Lastly, experience the diversity of shopping experiences in Washington County. From high-end European-style lifestyle centers and malls, to quaint antique stores and artisan shops, featuring art from local and regional artists, the region is a tax-free shopping paradise.
