Although Philadelphia is home to some of the most highly praised restaurants in the country, most of its specialties are decidedly down-to-earth.
The delicious cheese steak remains the best-known of Philly's food offerings. It's an artery-clogging combination of thinly sliced rib-eye steak, gooey cheese, and grilled onions and peppers, served on a fresh Italian roll. Hoagies, a Philadelphia spin on Italian sandwiches (called subs or heroes elsewhere), make quick, convenient, and highly filling lunches. Plump, salted, soft pretzels must be eaten with mustard to be the real deal.
An odd classic is snapper soup. The traditional recipe, made famous by Bookbinder's, involves adding turtle meat to a tomato-and-vegetable puree, flavored with herbs, garlic, and sherry.
