Day 1

Begin your tour at Frontier Texas – Frontier Texas! allows visitors to meet – at least figuratively – some of the real people who live and died on the Texas frontier between 1780 and 1880. Unlike a regular museum, Frontier Texas! uses first-person narratives rather than collections of artifacts to tell the story of the western Texas frontier.

Continue downtown tour at the Grace Museum – The Grace Museum, a beautifully restored 1909 hotel, houses three museums; The Abilene Historical Museum; the active Children’s Museum and the Art Museum. Grace Notes, an interactive sculpture created by artist and musician Edward Weiss. The Mallouf Boot Shop is a permanent exhibit that highlights the unique craft of custom cowboy boots.

Stroll through Center for Contemporary Arts a unique gallery and home to 70 artist members, ten working studios and three galleries. The Center sponsors Artwalk, the 2nd Thursday each month.

Lunch downtown at The Beehive – Great salads, hamburgers, steaks, seafood! Voted #4 in the state by Texas Monthly or Cypress Street Station serves up wonderful pasta dishes, seafood, steaks and save room for desserts! Other options include deli’s, bistros and cafes.

12th Armored Division Memorial Museum – The Memorial Museum displays and interprets the Division’s historical collection and serves as a teaching museum for the study of WWII and its impact on the American people.

National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature – The first of its kind in the nation, the Center features art exhibits from children's books such as Berenstein Bears, Golden Books, Robert Sabuda and many others.

Candies by Vletas – making candy the old fashion way – be sure and try to white chocolate covered grapes and chocolate covered strawberries.

Optional downtown activities, depending on schedule: Take in a classic movie at the Paramount Theatre. The Paramount Theatre is a fully restored art deco movie theatre featuring a ceiling with slow drifting clouds and twinkling stars. The theatre shows classic films on weekends and hosts art films, plays, and concerts throughout the year.

Tour the Abilene Zoo – The entire family will enjoy this award-winning zoo. The 13-acre complex compares habitats of the American Southwest with similar regions of Africa. The complex is filled with 173 species of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. It features a wetlands exhibit, discovery center, creepy crawler exhibit, tropical aviary and one of the few places you can feed a giraffe.

Day 2

Western Flavor!

Tours of Western Artisans – boots, saddles and hats. At James Leddy Boots, all boots are made by hand, to fit each individual personally. Head out for Art Reed’s Custom Saddles. Mr. Reed has been custom making saddles, chaps and belts for over 33 years. This small but unique shop is a treat to stop at. Tour 5-D Custom Hats and Leather.

Depart for Buffalo Gap Historic Village – Travel through time from the 1870s to the 1920s. Enjoy a rich collection of Indian artifacts and frontier firearms, plus 20 buildings from the founding of the area including the original Taylor County Courthouse and jail. Learn the skill of 1880’s style Vintage Base Ball. “Ghost Tours” have also become very popular. The Historic Village also houses the Texas State Press, a great collection of books can be found!

Lunch at Perini Ranch – Lunch or dinner at Perini Ranch is a Texas favorite! Choose dinner and dine under the stars, see longhorns grazing and enjoy a quiet Texas evening.
