Houston is a year-round destination but, weatherwise, spring and fall are the best times to visit. The city is located in the Gulf Coastal Plain section of Texas, only about 90 feet above sea level at its highest point. Winters are usually very mild, spring and fall are usually warm and pleasant, and summers are almost always steamy and hot. Brief but violent thunderstorms, with strong winds, heavy rain, and lightning, are common, especially in late summer, and these can also produce tornadoes. Houston's proximity to the coast makes it vulnerable to hurricanes that develop in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
