Introduction

Much of downtown San Antonio can be explored on foot or by way of the trolley system that runs frequently between points of interest. The heart of the visitor area is the Paseo del Rio -- or River Walk -- where luxury hotels, specialty shops, and restaurants line the banks of the San Antonio River. Just steps away is Texas's most recognized landmark: the Alamo, a symbol of Texas independence. The San Antonio Missions National Historic Park winds south from downtown to several scenic missions. Outside the city in the Hill Country, a car is a must; you can visit several towns in a day, taking in the beautiful landscape as you drive.
