The Muscle Shoals area – Muscle Shoals, Tuscumbia, Sheffield and Florence - is a treasure chest filled with vacation possibilities. If swinging a golf club is your taste, the Shoals is home to two of the Alabama Robert Trent Jones courses, the Schoolmaster and the Fighting Joe, located on the banks of the Tennessee River. Afterward you can experience world-class cuisine at 360 Degrees, a revolving restaurant overlooking the river.
Like the Tennessee River, music flows through "The Shoals." Feel the blues at the W.C. Handy Music Festival or marvel at the vast array of talent by touring the Alabama Music Hall of Fame. Muscle Shoals Music Cityfest celebrates the music heritage of the Muscle Shoals area, home of the famous “Muscle Shoals Sound,” and the center point in America’s music triangle – Memphis, Muscle Shoals and Nashville -which music fans still enjoy.
With advance notice, tour both FAME studio where Aretha Franklin’s “I Never Loved A Man” and Wilson Pickett’s “Mustang Sally” were recorded and Muscle Shoals Sound Studio where The Rolling Stones recorded “Brown Sugar” and “Wild Horses.”
Helen Keller and W.C. Handy, the “Father of the Blues” were born in the Shoals and their homes are open to the public. Frank Lloyd Wright designed a unique house that is now a museum. Seasonal tours of historic homes, walking tours, cemetery tours, and guided trolley tours are offered. Family fun in Spring Park includes amusements and a spectacular display of dancing waters at dusk. For the offbeat traveler, there is the world's only Coon Dog Cemetery! For outdoor enthusiasts there is a variety of bass, crappie and catfish.
The Muscle Shoals area is easy to reach. Driving distance from Memphis, Nashville or Birmingham is less than 3 hours.
