Introduction

Competition among the newest megaresorts is fierce and properties vie for family and leisure business with immaculately manicured golf courses and incredible water features -- the Valley of the Sun is carpeted with green and, surprisingly, filled with water so rivers, waterfalls, lakes, slides, pools, and even canals replete with gondolas put the humble hotel pool to shame.

The resorts come in all shapes and sizes; some properties consist of a large main hotel, but others are spread out in casitas (little houses) surrounding the golf courses. Most downtown Phoenix properties are business and family hotels, closer to the heart of the city -- and to the average vacationer's budget.  For a true Western experience, guest-ranch territory is 60 mi northwest, in the town of Wickenburg. Many people flee snow and ice to bask in the warmth of the Valley so winter is the high season, peaking in January through March. Summer season -- mid-May through the end of September -- is giveaway time, when a night at a resort often goes for half of the winter price.
