Top Spas

The Valley of the Sun is all about relaxation and there's no better place for it than at one of Phoenix's rejuvenating resort spas. Many feature Native American-inspired treatments and use indigenous ingredients such as agave, desert clay, and neroli oil (derived from orange blossoms). Spa lovers should plan to enjoy not only the treatments but the amenities that include pools, whirlpools, eucalyptus steam rooms, and relaxation areas with outdoor fireplaces. Some of our top picks are as follows.

Aji Spa at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort & Spa. A gem on the grounds of the Gila River Indian community, Aji incorporates its Native American surroundings into every aspect of the light-filled spa, from the name ("Aji" is Pima for sanctuary) to its contemporary Sonoran design and treatments. The Blue Coyote Wrap ($185 for 80 minutes) begins with a dry brush exfoliation and an application of Azulene mud, and culminates with a cedar-sage oil massage. A 50-minute massage starts at $125.

Alvadora at the Royal Palms Resort & Spa. At this Mediterranean-style villa treatments incorporate herbs, flowers, oils, and minerals indigenous to the Mediterranean. One signature treatment is the Orange Blossom Body Buff, a full body scrub that uses neroli oil. A 60-minute massage starts at $125. Spa use for nonresort guests is limited to Sun.-Thurs. and requires purchase of a spa package.

The Spa at JW Marriott's Camelback Inn. This is one of the Valley's most popular spas. Aches and pains will melt away with the 60-minute Native Hot Stone Massage (starts at $125) incorporating the Native American art of massaging the body with heated basalt stones. A 60-minute massage starts at $100. The men's spa lounge, with comfy leather chairs and a large television, will make even the most hesitant spa-goer feel at home.

Sanctuary Spa at Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain. This sleek Zen-like spa has 11 Asian-inspired indoor-outdoor treatment rooms nestled against Camelback Mountain. Try a transporting 30-minute Thai foot massage (starts at $85) or a Bamboo Lemongrass Scrub (30 minutes is $85). A 60-minute massage starts at $135. Spa use is restricted to resort guests only.

Willow Stream Spa at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess. This is one of the Valley's most elaborate spas. Inspired by "Havasupai," a hidden oasis in the Grand Canyon, there's water everywhere -- from the glamorous rooftop pool to streams that flow throughout the grounds. Amid this luxury, you might want to splurge for the two-hour Havasupai Body Treatment ($309) in which aches and pains are kneaded away under three waterfalls of varying pressure. It includes a eucalyptus foot massage, a body scrub, a soak in a private tub, and a body, face, and scalp massage. A 60-minute massage starts at about $140.
