Introduction
Driving is the easiest way to experience the Central Coast, which extends from Ventura County in the south to the Big Sur coastline in the north. A car gives you the flexibility to stop at scenic vista points along Highway 1, take detours through wine country, and drive to rural lakes and mountains. Traveling north through Ventura County to San Luis Obispo, you can feast your eyes on the rolling hills, peaceful valleys, and rugged mountains that stretch for miles along the shore. Especially in summer, you'll need to make reservations for a visit to Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument well before you depart for the coast. In summer and on foggy days the traffic on windy, two-lane Highway 1 can seem to move at a snail's pace from Cambria to Big Sur. Moving slowly, though, will give you the chance to enjoy the breathtaking views.
