Introduction

Restaurant prices are for a main course at dinner, excluding sales tax of 7¼%-7¾% (depending on location). The cuisine in Ventura and Santa Barbara is every bit as eclectic as it is in California's bigger cities. Fresh seafood is a standout, whether it's prepared simply in wharf-side hangouts or incorporated into sophisticated bistro menus. If you're after good, cheap food with an international flavor, follow the locals to Milpas Street, on the eastern edge of Santa Barbara's downtown. Dining attire on the Central Coast is generally casual, though slightly dressy casual wear is the custom at pricier restaurants. The Central Coast, from Solvang to Big Sur, is far enough off the interstate to ensure that nearly every restaurant or café has its own personality -- from chic to down-home and funky. A "foodie" renaissance has overtaken the Santa Ynez Valley, San Luis Obispo, Cambria, and Paso Robles, spawning dozens of new restaurants touting nouveau cuisine made with fresh organic produce and meats. There aren't many restaurants between Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument and Big Sur.
