Introduction
Art galleries and crafts shops abound on Cape Cod, a reflection of the long attraction the area has held for artists and craftspeople. Throughout the Cape you'll find weavers, candle makers, glassblowers, papermakers, and potters, as well as an inordinate number of shops specializing in country crafts. The region is also popular for antiquing, which means that both the genuine articles and the kitschy wannabes are in ready supply. Coastal environments and a seafaring past account for the proliferation of sea-related crafts on the Cape. A craft form that originated on the years-long voyages to whaling grounds is scrimshaw, the etching of finely detailed designs of sailing ships and sea creatures onto a hard surface. Cranberry glass, a light ruby glass made by fusing gold with glass or crystal, is sold in gift shops all over the Cape. For great vacation reading, the Cape has a number of highly browsable bookstores, some specializing in secondhand titles. Many have large selections of books about Cape Cod, from fiction to nautical matters to the great outdoors.
