Harlem in Focus

At the heart of African-American culture in New York City, the legendary neighborhood of Harlem is rich with history, music, and culinary adventures.

Guided Tours

Get your bearings with a guided bus or walking tour of the famous brownstone-lined streets, where you’ll learn more about the notable churches, cultural organizations, jazz clubs, restaurants, and residents of this fascinating area. Harlem Spirituals and Harlem Your Way! are just two of the many tour companies available. Some of these tours also offer Sunday morning outings, where you can let your spirit soar by taking part in a “gospel tour,” which includes a stop at a Baptist church to listen to a sermon and powerful gospel music.

Staples of Harlem

Take the afternoon to stroll down 125th Street, Harlem’s hub, and experience its nonstop flurry of activity, as well as such landmark sites as the Apollo Theater, which showcases emerging talent and hosts major concerts. Down the street, browse jewelry and African masks in an open-air market, and discover contemporary African-American art at the Studio Museum of Harlem.

Music and Food

Music and food are cultural cornerstones of Harlem life. Start your evening with some spicy soul food at places such as Sylvia’s “Soul Food” Restaurant and Sadie Mae’s Cafe and end it by soaking up jazz at one of the neighborhood’s many clubs such as the famous Lenox Lounge and Big Apple Jazz/EZ’s Woodshed.
