Hit the road(s) in Pennsylvania. As the birthplace of American Independence, it’s no secret that Pennsylvania is loaded with history. But there’s no better way to see it all and so much more than with a Pennsylvania Roadtrip. You can plan your own adventure at visitPA.com. In the meantime, here are some suggestions from the locals…
Start your Pennsylvania journey in Philadelphia, the birthplace of our nation and the home of Benjamin Franklin. Of course, visit the Liberty Bell and Constitution Center, but don’t miss Old City or South Street for the real local flavor. Then, starting heading west into the Pennsylvania countryside. Nearby, visit the great Revolutionary War site at Valley Forge. Continue on and wave at the passing Amish horse and buggy as you travel down Pennsylvania’s Dutch Country Roads through Lancaster County, a land rich in agriculture and early American heritage. Not far from there is “the sweetest place on earth,” Hershey, Pennsylvania, a land rich in chocolate and roller coasters. After you’ve had your fill of both, take a breather and head southwest to see where our nation’s resolve was tested and secured at Gettysburg and along the Pennsylvania Civil War Trails.
As you continue west towards Pittsburgh, take in the countryside of the Laurel Highlands, dotted with covered bridges and scenic waterways and some of the best outdoor recreation in the country. On your way, see Frank Lloyds Wright’s famous Fallingwater, a National Historic Landmark.
Onto another great Pennsylvania city: Pittsburgh, home to the six-time NFL Super Bowl champions, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and such American icons as Andrew Carnegie and Andy Warhol. In fact, while you’re there, you can tour world-renowned museums in honor of both men, including the Carnegie Museum of Art, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Carnegie Science Center, and The Andy Warhol Museum. But before you leave Pittsburgh, be sure to ride the funicular up Mount Washington for a great view of the city.
Take a hard right and head north towards the great Lake Erie. If the weather is right, take a sail on the lake or relax on its beautiful beaches or tour the old oil mansions and wineries that dot the area. Now, you’re heading back east for a drive across our famous Route 6. It won’t take long to see why it’s called one of the most scenic drives in the country. Be humbled by the sheer size and beauty of the Allegheny National Forest in the Pennsylvania Wilds. Make a stop in Bradford to visit the Zippo/Case Museum. Wind your way through small, gas-lit towns like Wellsboro. Or take a quick detour to see where Little League baseball was founded and plays out each year in Williamsport.
As you make your way back to Philadelphia, don’t head home until you’ve enjoyed nature at its finest in the Pocono Mountains. Depending on the weather, you could find yourself skiing the many slopes or hiking the main trails throughout the vast Poconos region.
