Triumph and Tragedy in the Laurel Highlands

The Que Creek Mine Rescue Site

On July 23, 2002, 9 miners became trapped in a coal mine in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, just southeast of Pittsburgh. Their 5 day ordeal and ensuing miraculous rescue galvanized a nation and inspired millions. We invite you to come visit the rescue site where you can walk right up to the rescue shaft where the miners emerged from the dark, cold mine 240 feet below after 77 hours of frigid darkness. You will be greeted by the 7 foot tall bronze statue of a coal miner at the top of the walkway into the rescue site. Hear the story of the miracle from people personally involved in the rescue.

The tour of the Que Creek Mine site takes approximately 1.5 hours. Drive time from Pittsburgh is 1.5 hours.

The Flight 93 Crash Site Memorial

This site commemorates the 9/11 crash of Flight 93 and the bravery of the passengers and crew who ensured that this flight would not be used by terrorists to attack other sites in the United States.

This memorial, currently a temporary site until the final memorial is completed in 2011, is manned by volunteers from the National Park Service.

Though open, and protected, 24 hours a day, it is suggested that visitors plan their visit between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day so volunteers can guide the visitor through the history of this solemn site.

Perched on a hillside just outside of Shanksville, Pennsylvania, visitors are encouraged to tour the temporary memorial at their leisure and to leave a part of themselves, in the form of tributes, in memory of those who perished on September 11, 2001.

This is a moving experience and one will leave this site a different person with a different perspective than when one arrives. Many visitors admit that upon leaving this site, one is silent.

Travel time from the Pittsburgh area is 2 hours. Visitation of this memorial takes approximately 1 hour.
