All in the Family
There's no better place to find something for everyone in your family than at the Pike Place Market, overlooking Elliott Bay. On the bay itself are the Seattle Aquarium and the Maritime Discovery Center. Hands-on museums, IMAX theaters, the Space Needle, and the Woodland Park Zoo are also perfect for families. Waterfront activities centers offer the chance to kayak, sail, or cruise on Seattle's lakes and bays, and just about every neighborhood has a park with a playground.
The Art of the Matter
The best way to view the works in Seattle's museums and galleries is on the First Thursday art walk, when admission is free and artists are often out with their displays. Western Washington is particularly known for its excellent glass art, the red-hot molten glass more easily fashioned in the region's temperate climate. Books are also big, and most bookstores host readings and other events. Benaroya Hall, with its perfect acoustics, is home to Seattle's symphony orchestra, while the beautiful McCaw Hall at the Seattle Center houses the city's renowned opera and ballet companies. Many historic theaters run first-rate performances with local casts.
Life After Dark
Although Seattle was the birthplace of grunge rock, today a variety of music overshadows the rumpled memories of the '90s. Clubs showcase the passionate musical stylings of everything from tinny garage bands to the biggest international names in Top 40 rock, country, and jazz and blues. Key Arena at the Seattle Center and Downtown's Paramount Theater are the two top indoor concert sites; in summer, outdoor music echoes from parks and at Pier 62. If you want to dance, head to a club in Downtown, Belltown, Capitol Hill, or the U-District.
