Going Country in Nashville

Gustavo Latorre photo of boot store in Nashville

In the mood for a snack and some country music, we went to Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge in Nashville, Tennessee. We thought we wouldn’t attract the attention of anyone there, but we were clearly out of context. Everybody except us was wearing huge hats, fancy boots and leather all over, and they were screaming and singing the songs. It was one of the best bar experiences I’ve ever had. Later, in an effort to blend in, we went to a boot store. But people were laughing as we tried on outfits—I guess we didn’t have the true country spirit.

Knoxville's Sunsphere

Gustavo Latorre photo of the Sunsphere in Knoxville

The major attraction in Knoxville, Tennessee, is this giant metal sphere. We walked there and then spent a while trying to find out how to get up it—when all we needed to do was press a lift button at the base. The view was great! We were able to see all the city and surroundings.

When you go

Favourite souvenir:

Raspberry jam from the farmers’ market in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

Travel tip:

Stop in every little town or place that gets your attention. And buy disposable cameras.

Best meal:

Fried pickles, tater tots and cheap cheese pizza. (A $5 (£3) pizza is unheard of in Chile.)

Where I’d like to go next:

Louisiana and New York for the culture, and then the Pacific Northwest for the nature.
